"Sometimes it's easy to lose sight of what's really important. Wild Roses, the debut album by the Fletcher Girls, is a sweet reminder that family and tradition are cornerstones of not just bluegrass and old-time music, but life itself.
The Fletcher Girls - Connie Fletcher, Kelli Medhus, Holly Tietz, Brenda Hanson, and Jeannie McCullough - are sisters from Ferry County, Washington. They grew up with a solid foundation rooted in the Appalachian music their grandparents brought from Kentucky. On Wild Roses, the sisters two, three, four and five part harmonies shine on classics like, A.P. Carter's "Faded Coat of Blue" and J.B. Coates' "The Sweetest Gift".
The two originals - the title (Connie [and Brenda]) and "Shim-Sham" (Jeannie)-are standouts that beckon more song writing by the Fletcher Girls. "Shim-Sham" takes on even greater family flavor with narrative by the sisters' mother and grandmother. It's tenderness is matched only by the girls' father Keith's 34-second solo refrain from "Daddy's Wildwood Flower".
Wild Roses concludes with the entire Fletcher clan on the "Circle Medley". This collection recalls memories of family reunions, holiday picnics, and evenings on the porch. Those are precious memories." (TAW)
